The skin barrier: what it is and why it is essential for healthy skin

Some customers come into the shop with a specific problem: their skin is flaking, reacting to products that used to work, or doesn’t look its best despite regular use of serums. The answer often isn’t another product, but the fact that the skin cannot function properly until the skin barrier has been restored. That is why we have dedicated a separate article to this topic — and linked it to the products we wholeheartedly recommend in the shop.
What is the skin barrier and how does it work?
The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin — the stratum corneum — consisting of dead cells (corneocytes) bound together by lipids: ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol. This structure acts as a physical barrier against external influences and also as a regulator: it retains moisture inside and prevents irritants, bacteria and allergens from entering from the outside.
An important component of the skin barrier is the microbiome – a community of microorganisms living on the skin’s surface that regulates inflammation, protects against pathogens and helps to restore the skin barrier. When this balance is disrupted, the skin makes this abundantly clear.
A healthy skin barrier is strong, hydrated and non-reactive. A damaged barrier allows irritants from the outside to penetrate, whilst at the same time losing the moisture it should retain.
Signs of a damaged skin barrier – how to spot them
In the shop, we come across the issue of a damaged skin barrier every day. It isn’t always obvious at first glance, but there are a few tell-tale signs that crop up time and again:
- Dryness and tightness that don’t respond even to layering moisturising products
- Redness and sensitivity to products that previously worked without any problems
- Peeling for no apparent reason
- A stinging or burning sensation after applying serum or toner
- An uneven texture and the feeling that the skin isn’t absorbing the products as well as it used to
- Increased sensitivity following exfoliation or dermatological treatments
- Reactivity to changes in the weather, stress or the environment
Important note: a compromised skin barrier is not just a problem for dry skin. Even oily or combination skin can have a compromised barrier, which manifests itself in paradoxical oiliness, a tendency towards inflammatory acne or blackheads.
What damages the skin barrier
These factors are both external and internal. External factors include over-cleansing, excessive peeling or exfoliation, unsuitable pH levels in cleansing products and shampoos, insufficient SPF protection, or prolonged exposure to cold and wind. Internal factors include stress, hormonal fluctuations, lack of sleep, and a genetic predisposition to atopic dermatitis or psoriasis.
Even high-quality products can weaken the skin barrier
Even a carefully designed skincare routine can overload the skin if the products are combined too intensively, in the wrong order, or without taking the skin’s current condition into account. Not all skin types can handle retinol when the skin barrier is compromised, and not all skin types can tolerate acids on a daily basis.
When your skin stops responding well, the natural instinct is often to add another product — a stronger serum, a more intensive exfoliator or a new active ingredient. In practice, however, the answer is often the opposite: less, not more.
Above all, the skin barrier needs space to recover. Retinol, acids, exfoliants and certain forms of vitamin C in high concentrations are effective ingredients, but they can exacerbate irritation in compromised skin. Skin that stings even after a gentle toner usually doesn’t need more active ingredients, but rather stabilisation.
In the shop, therefore, many conversations lead to simplifying the skincare routine rather than adding another product. Sometimes it’s enough to stop using retinol and acids for a few weeks; at other times, replacing one of your usual products with a formula that has a simpler composition and no unnecessary fragrances can help. Skin that has been reacting with irritation for a long time often doesn’t react to everything at once, but to a specific combination or an overloaded routine.
Only once the barrier is stable does it make sense to gradually reintroduce the active ingredients.
Ingredients that genuinely support the restoration of the skin barrier

When it comes to restoring the skin barrier, we’re not looking for miracles. We’re looking for ingredients with a proven mechanism of action.
Ceramides are lipids naturally present in the skin barrier. Replenishing them from the outside helps to restore the barrier’s structure and reduce transepidermal water loss. You’ll find them, for example, in Noili Ceramides Depuffing Eye Serum, where they work in combination with the cooling effect of the roll-on applicator.
Squalane is a biomimetic oil that resembles natural sebum in texture and behaviour. It is easily absorbed by the skin, does not cause blackheads and actively strengthens the skin barrier. In Noili Bakuchiol & Squalane Oil Serum, it works in tandem with bakuchiol – a plant-based analogue of retinol with no irritating potential.
Beta-glucan and peptides hydrate, soothe and support the restoration of the skin’s structure. Noili Peptides & Ferment Essence combines these ingredients with fermented acerola, which is rich in vitamin C, thereby promoting collagen production and providing antioxidant protection.
BiaComplex™ from Codex Labs is a biotechnology complex designed to target the skin microbiome – a system of bioactive ingredients that supports the microbiome and the restoration of the skin barrier. Codex Labs formulates each product so that it does not disrupt the microbiome, but actively supports it.
Prebiotic and microbiome-friendly preservative systems are a detail that most customers don’t think about, yet it makes all the difference. Codex Labs PreservX® is a proprietary preservative system designed to be as gentle as possible on the skin and its microbiome. Customers with long-term sensitive skin will notice this difference in practice.
Vitamin C in its stabilised form promotes collagen production and protects against oxidative stress. Noili 10% C+Squalane Radiance Drops utilise an oil-soluble form of vitamin C, which is less harsh on the skin barrier than some aqueous forms in high concentrations.
The skin barrier and deodorants: a link we often overlook

The skin barrier isn’t just limited to the skin on your face. Your arms, underarms and body also have a skin barrier, and standard antiperspirants containing aluminium salts work by reducing perspiration, thereby interfering with the skin’s natural function in these areas.
Corpus is a natural deodorant from California formulated without aluminium, bicarbonate of soda or parabens – in other words, without ingredients that irritate the sensitive underarm skin or disrupt its balance. Rather than blocking the sweat glands, it uses a formula that neutralises the bacteria responsible for odour. For customers dealing with sensitivity in this area, it is a practical part of a holistic approach to the skin barrier.
Concept Story products that protect and restore the skin barrier
Rather than giving you a general list, we’ll tell you what we recommend in the shop for specific situations.
A compromised skin barrier following treatment or exfoliation: Noili Bakuchiol & Squalane Oil Serum for evening regeneration and Codex Labs products with BiaComplex™ to support the microbiome. This combination addresses both the restoration of the lipid barrier and microbial balance.
Reactive, sensitive skin prone to redness: Codex Labs formulations featuring the PreservX® preservative system are designed specifically for this skin type. Our customers with atopic tendencies or psoriasis choose Codex Labs as their first choice.
Dehydrated skin that feels tight: Noili Peptides & Ferment Essence as the first step after cleansing, followed by Bakuchiol Serum. This duo is also available in a gift set — and has long been one of the most sought-after sets in the shop.
Sensitive skin: Incorporating Corpus deodorant into your daily routine – switching to a natural deodorant requires a period of adjustment (usually two to four weeks), and it is precisely after this period that many customers find they no longer want to go back to conventional antiperspirants.
Our experience with the Concept Story: what practice tells us
The concept of the skin barrier isn’t an abstract one for us. We encounter it every day in the shop, in conversations about skincare routines, and when searching for a product that will finally work. And it is precisely this day-to-day work that informs the selection of brands we stock.
At Codex Labs, we had the opportunity to meet the founder, Barbara Paldus, in person during her visit to Concept Story. Barbara holds a PhD from Stanford and has many years of experience in scientific research, which is evident in the brand’s approach to formulations and product development.
Both the professional training and our one-to-one discussions helped us understand the Codex Labs philosophy much more deeply – from working with the skin barrier to the way the brand approaches sensitive and reactive skin. And it is precisely this level of thoughtfulness that, in our view, is the reason why Codex Labs products perform differently in practice than the majority of standard premium skincare.
At EVY Technology, we completed a certified training course focusing on SPF protection and the functioning of the skin barrier, including a face-to-face meeting with co-founder Jean Pinto. This level of understanding of the subject is reflected in how we are able to explain to our customers the link between UV protection and a healthy skin barrier, as UV damage is one of the most commonly overlooked factors in its weakening.
When you come into the shop with a question about the skin barrier, we don’t just refer you to the product description. We ask about your skincare routine, what you’ve changed, what works and what doesn’t. Healthy skin doesn’t start with a single ‘hero product’ – it starts with understanding how the skin barrier works underneath.
Where to start: a simple approach to restoring the skin barrier
Instead of a complex ten-step routine, we recommend starting with something simpler if your skin barrier is damaged:
- Cleansing with a gentle, sulphate-free product – the foundation on which everything else is built (such as Omorovicza’s Cleansing Foam)
- Moisturising essence with peptides and ferments (Noili Peptides & Ferment Essence) – apply immediately after cleansing, to damp skin
- Regenerating Serum – Noili Bakuchiol & Squalane Oil Evening Serum; for more intensive microbiome regeneration, Codex Labs products with BiaComplex™
- SPF every day – the skin’s barrier cannot regenerate if it is exposed to UV radiation without protection. Darling Cloud Drop SPF 50 or Evy technology.
When to expect results: if you follow the routine consistently using the right products, a noticeable improvement in skin responsiveness and hydration is usually evident after two to four weeks.
If you’re not sure where to start, our team will offer you personalised advice – based on your skin’s current condition, its needs, and what has worked for you in the long term.
You can try out all our products in person at the Concept Story store at Lazaretska 31 in the centre of Bratislava, or explore the full skincare collection online in our webshop.
