Codex Labs is one of those brands where the scientific basis is evident in every detail – from the formulations to the way they communicate their results.
When we decided to add Codex Labs to our portfolio, it wasn’t just about the product itself. We were drawn to the brand’s philosophy, the level of research behind it, and the personality of its founder, Barbara Paldus – a scientist who approaches skincare with the same precision as she does science.
At Concept Story, we are one of the few places in Slovakia where you can try Codex Labs products for yourself – in an environment where skincare is approached with a personalised touch, offering consultations and the chance to test the products in real life.
During the time we have been working with Codex Labs, we have had the opportunity to get to know the brand not only through its products, but also through the philosophy, research and approach on which it is built. And it is precisely this level of thoughtfulness that is one of the reasons why it has naturally become part of our selection.
Barbara Paldus: the scientist who decided to base cosmetics on data

Codex Labs did not start out as a traditional beauty brand. Behind the brand is Barbara Paldus — a scientist with Czech roots, a PhD from Stanford and more than 55 US patents, who, prior to founding Codex Labs, focused on biotechnology and scientific solutions with a real-world impact.
However, the impetus to create the brand came from a more personal place. Her son suffered from severe allergies and sensitivity, which led her to scrutinise the formulations of the products they used every day. As a scientist, she was surprised by how often skincare relies on marketing jargon, yet offers far less in the way of transparent data, clinical results and the real impact of formulations on sensitive skin.
It was precisely this experience that led to the creation of Codex Labs – a brand that approaches skincare with the precision of scientific research. Its formulations are not based on trends or marketing claims, but on clinical data, the efficacy of ingredients and a long-standing respect for the skin barrier.
It is also important to us that Barbara remains actively involved with the brand, not only in terms of product development but also on a personal level. She has visited Bratislava on several occasions as part of Concept Story, where we had the opportunity to speak to her directly about the Codex Labs philosophy, the formulations, and her thoughts on the future of skincare from a scientific perspective.

And it is precisely this level of expertise, transparency and thoughtful approach that makes Codex Labs a brand we feel has a natural place in our selection.
The skin microbiome: the foundation on which Codex Labs is built
The skin microbiome has become a frequently used term in the skincare industry. At Codex Labs, however, this is not just marketing jargon, but one of the core principles on which the brand is built.
The microbiome is a complex ecosystem of microorganisms naturally present on the skin’s surface. It plays a vital role in protecting the skin barrier, regulating inflammatory processes and maintaining the skin’s overall resilience to external influences. If this balance is disrupted by stress, harsh formulations, hormonal changes or the environment, the skin reacts with sensitivity, dehydration, redness or increased reactivity.
That is precisely why Codex Labs approaches its formulations in a way that respects the skin’s natural functions and supports its microbial balance rather than disrupting it. It is not merely a matter of addressing visible symptoms, but rather a long-term approach focused on the quality, stability and resilience of the skin barrier.
BiaComplex™ and AntuComplex™: science you can see on your skin
Two proprietary technologies form the basis of most Codex Labs products.
BiaComplex™ is a system of bioactive ingredients designed to support the microbiome and restore the skin barrier. It works at a level that standard moisturising skincare often fails to address comprehensively – it does not merely hydrate the surface, but actively supports the processes that enable the skin to retain moisture on its own.
AntuComplex™ targets visible signs of ageing and oxidative stress. It combines antioxidant and regenerative ingredients to ensure that the skin not only looks healthier and more balanced, but is also more resilient to external influences in the long term.
This range is particularly suitable for more mature skin, from around 30 years of age, which begins to naturally lose its elasticity, radiance and ability to cope effectively with daily stress and environmental stressors.
Both ranges are the result of many years of research and formulations based on a scientific approach and clinical testing. Codex Labs takes a very straightforward approach to transparency – it publishes test results directly on the products and within the formulations themselves.
PreservX®: a preservative system you’ll notice because you won’t smell it
One of the things that customers with sensitive skin particularly appreciate about Codex Labs is its proprietary PreservX®preservation system.
Common preservatives in cosmetics need to be potent enough to protect the product – yet it is precisely this potency that can irritate the skin or disrupt the microbiome. Codex Labs PreservX® was developed with maximum gentleness in mind: it protects the product whilst respecting the natural balance of the skin and its microbiome.
If you’re the sort of customer who reads the ingredients list carefully and looks for products without unnecessary additives, this is a detail you’ll notice.

Who are Codex Labs products designed for?
Codex Labs isn’t designed for any one specific skin type, but rather for people who take a more conscious approach to skincare and are interested in what their products actually contain, how they work, and what long-term effects they have on the skin.
However, in the long term, we have seen the strongest response in:
- sensitive and reactive skin – skin that reacts to changes in the environment, stress or the ingredients in products
- compromised skin barrier – visible dryness, flaking, discomfort after washing
- a tendency towards atopic eczema or psoriasis – where a gentle formulation is an absolute priority
- Skin care after dermatological procedures – when you need care that promotes recovery, not irritation
This precision in targeting is no coincidence – it is a direct result of the fact that Codex Labs’ products are developed on the basis of research and a clinical approach.
Best-sellers and how to incorporate them into your routine
If you’re new to Codex Labs, a few products consistently serve as a gateway to the brand’s philosophy.
Our team had the opportunity to meet Barbara Paldus in person at Concept Story – on several occasions and in a setting that allowed for a much more in-depth discussion than a standard brand presentation.
During her visits to Bratislava, we spoke with her about the Codex Labs philosophy, formulation development, working with the skin barrier, and how she approaches skincare from a scientific perspective and with a focus on long-term efficacy. We also attended a specialist training session led directly by the brand, which enabled us to understand the individual products within the broader context of their research and formulation.
It is precisely this level of expertise, transparency and personalised approach that makes Codex Labs, for us, not just another skincare brand, but a well-thought-out concept built on genuine research and a deep respect for the skin.

If you’re not sure which product is best suited to your skin, we’ll make a personalised recommendation in-store – based on the current condition of your skin, its needs, and how your skincare routine works in practice.
Not based on generic categories, but on what actually works for your skin.
Basic principles for incorporating into your routine:
- Start with one product and give your skin time to adjust – usually 2–4 weeks
- Before using a new product, do not combine it with harsh acids or retinoids, and allow the skin barrier to stabilise
- Cleansing is key: Codex Labs’ formulations work best on skin where the skin barrier is at least partially intact
Sustainability that is more than just marketing talk
Codex Labs approaches sustainability with the same precision as it does its formulations. From ingredient selection to packaging solutions, the brand operates with a focus on long-term sustainability, transparency and the lowest possible environmental impact.
This is one of the reasons why Codex Labs appeals to customers who, when it comes to skincare, don’t just look for immediate results on their skin, but are also interested in the broader context of how and from what the products are made.
When the founder comes to take a look in person
Last year, we at Concept Story had the honour of welcoming Barbara Paldus, the founder and scientist behind Codex Labs, to an exclusive event for our community.
It wasn’t just a product presentation. It was a genuine discussion: about the science behind the formulations, about the decisions that set Codex Labs apart from the rest, and about what Barbara considers to be a fundamental flaw in conventional skincare. Our customers had the opportunity to ask questions directly – with no filter, no PR answers.
For us as a team, this was confirmation of what we feel in our day-to-day work with the products: Codex Labs isn’t a brand that wins you over with marketing. It wins you over with what it can explain.
