How we select brands at Concept Story: a philosophy that isn’t about trends

On choice, values, and why nothing in the Concept Story is left to chance
Concept Story wasn’t created out of a need to sell more. It was created out of a need to choose better.
At a time when everything is instantly available in unlimited quantities, we see choice as a responsibility. Not as an aesthetic exercise, nor as a way of keeping up with trends. But as a decision that has consequences – for the brand, for the customer and for us.
Concept Story is not a shop in the traditional sense. It is a filter. A space where selection is not based on an algorithm, but on value. A place where every brand and every product is asked: Does this make sense?
Being a curator means knowing how to say ‘no’ more often than ‘yes’.
Choice is not a matter of chance. It is a choice.
We’re often asked how we choose the brands that become part of our portfolio. The answer is simple, but not quick.
We don’t work with mass-market selections. We don’t accept products simply because they “work”. Every brand goes through an internal approval process comprising several stages – both value-based and practical.
When it comes to fashion, we look at the quality of the materials, the composition, the country of origin, the craftsmanship and the brand’s background. We’re interested in who’s behind it, where and how it’s made, its approach to sustainability, and whether its aesthetic fits naturally into our concept.
At the same time, we look at the bigger picture:
How will this product fit into our range?
Does it complement our existing brands?
Can it offer our customers something of lasting value?
Investing in a high-quality, timeless piece makes more sense than a series of impulsive compromises. And it is precisely this philosophy that we wish to share with others.

Cosmetics we can stand behind
We apply the same approach to niche skincare and beauty.
We carefully check the ingredients, look into where they come from, examine the manufacturing processes and the brand’s philosophy, and also consider how the brand communicates with its community. We test the products ourselves – not as a marketing ploy, but as a prerequisite for trust.
For us, aesthetics are an integral part of quality. Minimalist design often signals well-thought-out content. It’s not a rule, but it’s a language we understand.
Because we don’t want to be just a place to shop. We want to be a place where you can find out why something works and, conversely, why something else doesn’t.

A price we can justify
Our products aren’t cheap. Nor are they deliberately overpriced.
When we talk about a justifiable price, we mean something specific: every product we include in our range must be priced at a level that reflects its true value — the quality of the materials, ethical production, fairness towards the manufacturer, and the sustainability of the process.
For every product, we strive to assess whether its price truly reflects its quality, materials and manufacturing process. If a product is in our shop, its price is justified – not to be impressive, but because none of the elements behind it can be produced cheaply.
For us, fair pricing is just as much a part of curation as aesthetics.

The local scene as a natural part of our story
Concept Story is also a platform for local designers. Not as an afterthought, but as a natural part of the selection.
Collaborations don’t just happen by chance. They are preceded by dialogue, face-to-face meetings and an understanding of what the brand stands for.
We also regularly host the creators themselves – designers and brand founders – at our venue, such as Eliška Lhotská, Barbara Paldus and the founders of the natural make-up brand Fraela.
We want you to have the chance to meet the people behind the products you’ll find here.

Curating isn’t something you can do from behind a desk.
Three ways to choose
We make our selection in three ways:
Local fashion showsWe
follow domestic design first-hand at the shows of Slovak and Czech designers, where we see the collections in context, rather than in a catalogue.
Central European
TripsWe travel to cities such as Budapest and Prague, where we meet brands in person and get to know them outside the online world.
Meet-ups at our store
: The Concept Story space isn’t just a shop. It’s a place where we regularly host designers and brand founders so that you can get to know them too.

Paris, Who’s NextAt
the Who’s Next trade fair, we meet the founders and representatives of the brands we go on to work with. We examine materials, discuss production and make decisions on the spot.
That’s one of the reasons why you’ll find brands such as Kourbela and The Tiny Big Sister in our shop today – we discovered them there.
We don’t bring back quantity from Paris.
We bring back conscious choices.
Less, but more precise
Concept Story offers a selection spanning various categories – fashion, vintage, niche cosmetics, design objects and wellbeing products. At first glance, it appears diverse. At its core, however, lies a consistent ethos.
With every product, we ask ourselves:
Does it have a quality we can stand behind?
Does it have lasting value?
Does it represent us?
If the answer isn’t clear, the product won’t make it onto our shelves.

Community as part of the selection process
Curating is not a one-sided process. It is also shaped by the community that grows alongside us.
Feedback, conversations in-store, questions on the online shop, interest in specific materials or brands – all of this informs our decision-making. Concept Story is not a fixed concept. It is a dialogue.
If you keep coming back to us, if you invest in pieces that will last you for years, if you care about the materials and where they come from – you’re showing us that our selection is worth it.
And that is precisely why we take it seriously. Because we believe that retail can be sophisticated.
That the selection can be carefully curated. That a shop can also be a space for meaningful discussion about something that matters.
We’re not interested in the quantity of products, but in a selection we can stand behind. If you take home an item from our shop or online store that will be with you for years to come – then it all makes sense.
And we stand by that. 🙂
