About the theme: The story of Deucalion begins with Zeus, who, disgusted by human wickedness, decides to punish humanity with a great flood, thus ending the Bronze Age. In his rage, rivers overflowed their banks, the sea flooded the coastal lowlands, engulfed the foothills of the mountains, and all of humanity was wiped out – except for Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha, who were the only survivors. They were saved by a warning given to them by Deucalion’s father, Prometheus, and so they built a large chest in which they survived for nine days. The two survivors found themselves on Mount Parnassus – the only place not affected by the flood – and begged Zeus to spare them. At the same time, he asked the goddess Themis for advice. The goddess of law and order among humans and nature secretly advised them to “throw the bones of their great mother behind them”. Deucalion and Pyrrha understood “mother” to mean Gaia – the mother of all living things, and “bones” to mean stones. So they threw stones behind them, which soon began to lose their hardness and take shape. Gradually, they gained weight and the beginnings of human form appeared. The parts that were soft and moist became skin, the veins in the rock became human veins, and the hardest parts of the rocks grew into bones. The stones thrown by Pyrrha produced women. Men were born from the stones thrown by Deucalion. And so the planet was once again filled with pure people who, freed from the sins of their predecessors, could begin a new era of humanity.

About the collaboration: The exclusive series of porcelain plates, Metamorphoses Collection, was created in collaboration between the design platform Artisème and Czech illustrator and artist Michal Bačák. The series is inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses and takes you through four key stories of the epic composition – from myths about the creation of man to fates filled with unhappy love. Pay attention to even the smallest details, because nothing depicted is placed randomly. Each symbol tells a different layer of the story and refers to Ovid’s original texts.

Words have recorded the lives of people since the dawn of time, whether immortalised in spoken language or on written pages. Myths, in turn, gave people hope that God could grant mercy to man and that tragedy could befall even those who were most beautiful. Each attribute carefully tells a different level of the story and refers to Ovid’s original texts.
