About the theme: Adonis, son of Myrrha (who turned into a sacred tree immediately after giving birth), became an abandoned orphan. However, fate was kind to him, because the little boy was found by Aphrodite herself, who took him in and entrusted him to Persephone’s care. Adonis grew up surrounded by the love of both goddesses, achieved remarkable beauty and, as he grew older, won their hearts. Each of them wanted the exceptionally beautiful Adonis for herself. The dispute was eventually resolved by Zeus, who ordered Adonis to spend a third of the year with Aphrodite, a third with Persephone, and a third with the one he chose. However, his heart belonged to Aphrodite, so he chose her. They were inseparable – until he went hunting. One day, despite her warnings, he ventured deep into the forest, where the jealous Ares – god of war and lover of Aphrodite – was waiting for him. He sent a wild boar to kill the unfortunate Adonis. When he died in Aphrodite’s arms, she wept so bitterly that red roses grew where her tears fell. And in the pool of Adonis’ blood, anemones and pomegranates grew again. The pomegranate held by Aphrodite symbolises loss, but also the fruits of her love.

About the collaboration: The exclusive Metamorphoses Collection series of porcelain plates was created in collaboration between the Artisème design platform and Czech illustrator and artist Michal Bačák. The series is inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses and takes you through four key stories of the epic composition – from myths about the creation of man to fates filled with unhappy love. Pay attention to even the smallest elements, because nothing depicted is placed randomly. Each symbol tells a different layer of the story and refers to Ovid’s original texts.

Words have recorded the lives of people since the dawn of time, whether immortalised in spoken language or on written pages. Myths, in turn, gave people hope that God could grant mercy to man and that tragedy could befall even those who were most beautiful. Each attribute carefully tells a different level of the story and refers to Ovid’s original texts.
